Go for it and make 2012 your year!

It’s that time of year again. A bright new year stretches ahead, filled with possibilities and fresh opportunities to turn those resolutions into realities.

You’ve likely set your goals and enthusiastically taken a step or two toward them. Why not make this year different? Rather than looking at setting the same old resolutions, why not decide that this will be the year you get serious about making changes that lead to the success you want.

What is the one thing that would make the most difference for you if it was handled? Is it a problem that needs to be addressed? An opportunity that would catapult your career, business or personal life to a new level? Do you need to deal with a difficult client, employee or supervisor? Would you benefit from starting a fitness program, paying off debt or scheduling regular time off?

To produce a different result, something will need to change. What you have done up until now has gotten you where you are. Doing the same thing going forward is going to keep you there.

Change can be frightening and uncomfortable. That’s why many people choose to continue repeating past behaviors rather than risking a change that will take them to their most cherished goal or dream.

Is there a change you've wanted to make, but just haven't been able to get started? Why not begin today? Here are four tips to help you:

• Decide that you will make a change. Hope is not a strategy. Rather than sitting around hoping things will change, decide that you will commit to doing something different in order to create different results in your life, your relationships or your career.

• Get clear on your desired outcome. It’s hard to hit a target you can’t see. If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you get there? Where do you see yourself once the change has become a reality? What is important about the goal?

• Create a plan. Develop a plan to use as your roadmap and guide. It is easier to make progress when you have outlined the steps to take. A clear plan will act as a compass to keep you on course amidst the hundreds of distractions you will face along the way.

• Get into action. Once you decide to make a change, it's time to take action. Many people get stuck at this crucial step, letting their fear of the unknown stop them from moving forward. By taking action, you create momentum and positive energy to propel you forward.

What will you do differently this year? Why not make 2012 the year you go for it!

Ready to Re-Start?

It is hard to believe it is June already and summer is beginning. It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the holidays and toasting the beginning of 2011. Now is a good time to check in to see how you are doing with your goals and resolutions.

Have you made the progress you intended so far? Are you feeling proud of your accomplishments and great about the goals you are working toward? Or do you need to refocus and recommit to achieving your goals and keeping those New Year's resolutions?

Rather than punish yourself if you've fallen short of your own expectations, now is a good time to assess where you are and course correct so that you are on track as you go forward. It's not too late to get started making your goals a reality. What is one thing you can do today?

1. Set goals. What do you want? What are your goals? List 50 things you would like to be, do and have in the next 5 years. Clearly define, in as much detail as possible, exactly what they look like. It is hard to hit a goal you can’t see. Ask yourself: What do I want?

2. Believe. Without belief, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to make progress. Take time to think about your goal and visualize yourself having already achieved it. Start feeling and acting as if the goal has already been reached, and then just do what it takes to finish it. Ask yourself: Do I believe I can reach my goals?

3. Connect with your goals. It is easy to lose sight of your goals if you don't make a conscious effort to keep them in front of you. Write your goals down and then post them where you will see them every day - on your desk, on the bathroom mirror, on a whiteboard or wherever you will see them and be reminded of what you want to accomplish. Ask yourself: Where will I post my goals to keep them in sight?

4. Create daily success habits. Eliminate the consequences of non-performance and focus on daily action instead. Get your energy from taking action rather than measuring up to the goal. If you need some help getting into action, consider hiring a coach to help you make it happen. Ask yourself: What action will I take now toward my goal?

Get Luckier!

Happy St. Pat’s Day! It’s that time of year when we celebrate the “luck of the Irish” and the magic of spring. What a great time to think about how to be luckier in life and create more of what you want.

Did you know there are things you can do to increase your odds for luck?

Being lucky starts with your state of mind. Research has found that people who think they are lucky tend to have more luck in their life. They have a lucky mindset and think about possibilities rather than problems. As a result, they are more open and receptive to luck.

Being prepared helps, too. A wise person once said, “Luck is where opportunity and preparedness meet.” Being ready for success when a door opens will empower you to step in and try something different.

If you want more luck in reaching your goals, here’s a way to have a 95% chance of success. According to researchers at BYU, the probability of achieving a goal if:
• You hear an idea is 10%
• You hear an idea and set a deadline to reach it, odds go to 40%
• You hear an idea, set a deadline and outline a plan, you have a 50% chance for success
• You do all of the above plus commit to someone else that you will accomplish your goal, your probability for success increases to 65%
• You do the above and set a specific accountability appointment with the person you have committed to, your chance for success skyrockets to 95%!
Are you ready to be luckier in life and business? Call me to schedule your 30-minute complimentary Discovery Session and start now to create more luck in your life!

Run with Purpose

Sunday was the ING Marathon in Miami. As I walked to the gym for my workout, I was inspired by the runners on their way to the finish line just a little over a mile away. Some were trudging, some walking, but the majority were still running toward their goal.

As I cheered the runners on, I couldn’t help but think about the hours and days and weeks of preparation that had gone into making the incredible experience a reality for each of them.

I thought about what it takes to be successful in running a marathon. It begins with a decision to go for a big goal, like running 26.2 miles! Once the goal is clearly defined, then you have to create a plan that outlines the steps you will take to reach the goal. And, most importantly, it takes commitment to the dream which includes consistent, persistent effort on a daily basis.

Success in any endeavor is the same process. One of my big goals for this year is to help educate a child by focusing my running for the next 5 months on a program called “Run for Malawi.” I am partnering with Nu Skin Enterprises to provide scholarships for children in Malawi, Africa so that they have the opportunity to receive an education. For every 1,000 miles, Nu Skin will provide one scholarship that includes room & board.

My friend, Dr. Jacque Russo, and I are committed to at least one scholarship and we need your help! If you run or walk – or would like to start now – every mile will contribute to educating a child. Will you join us in reaching this big goal? For details, email me at patmorgan@smoothsailingsuccess.com.

Tips for Success in Reaching a BIG goal:

1. Decide.
Make a decision about what you want and set a clearly defined goal. Ask yourself: What do I want?

2. Commit.
Make a commitment to your success by defining a plan and action steps you can follow to reach your goal. It will be easier to stay on track if you are clear on the steps you must take. Ask yourself: Am I fully committed to reaching my goal?

3. Take action.
Be in action and do something every day for your goal. Ask yourself: What will I do now for my dream?

4. Partner.
Success is easier and more fun when you have someone to share the journey. Ask yourself: Who will be my success partner in reaching my goal?

“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.”

Today I will be master of my emotions.

The Greatest Secret: Scroll VI by Og Mandino.

Today I will be master of my emotions.

The tides advance; the tides recede. winter goes and summer comes. Summer wanes the cold increases. The sun rises; the sun sets. Th moon is full; the moon is black. The birds arrive; the birds depart. Flowers bloom; flowers fade. Seeds are sown; harvests are reaped. All nature is a circle of moods and I am a part of nature and s, like the tides, my moods will rise; my moods will fall.

Today I will be master of my emotions.

It is one of nature's tricks, little understood, that each day I awaken with moods that changed from yesterday. yesterday's joy will become today's sadness; yet today's sadness will grow into tomorrow's joy. Inside me is a wheel, constantly turning from sadness to joy, from exultation to depression, from happiness to melancholy. Like the flowers, today's full bloom of joy will fade and wither into despondency, yet I will remember that s today's dead flower carries the seed of tomorrow's bloom so, too, does today's sadness carry the seed of tomorrow's joy.

Today I will be master of my emotions.

And how will I master these emotions so that each day will be productive? For unless my mood is right the day will be a failure. Trees and plans depend on the weather to flourish but I make my own weather, yea I transport it with me. If I bring rain and gloom and darkness and pessimism to my customers then they will react with rain and gloom and pessimism and they will purchase naught. If I bring joy and enthusiasm and brightness and laughter to my customers they will react with joy and enthusiasm and brightness and laughter and my weather will produce a harvest of sales and a granary of gold for me.

Today I will be master of my emotions.

If I feel depressed, I will sing.
If I feel sad, I will laugh.
If I feel ill I will double my labor.
If I feel fear I will plunge ahead.
If I feel inferior I will wear new garments.
If i feel uncertain I will raise my voice.
If I feel poverty I will think of wealth to come.
If I feel incompetent I will remember past success.
If I feel insignificant I will remember my goals.

Today I will be master of my emotions.

Today I control my destiny, and my destiny is to become the greatest salesman in the world.

I will become master of myself.

I will become great.

I will live this day as if it is my last....

The Greatest Secret: Scroll V by Og Mandino.

I will live this day as if it is my last.

And what shall I do with this last precious day, which remains in my keeping? First, I will seal up its container of life so that not one drop spills itself upon the sand. I will waste not a moment mourning yesterday’s misfortunes, yesterday’s defeats, yesterday’s aches of the heart, for why should I throw good after bad?

Can sand flow upward in the hourglass? Will the sun rise where it sets and set where it rises? Can I relive the errors of yesterday and right them? Can I become younger than yesterday? No. Yesterday is buried forever and I will think of it no more.

I will live this day as if it is my last.

And what then shall I do? Forgetting yesterday neither will I think of tomorrow. Why should I throw now after maybe? Can tomorrow’s sand flow through the glass before today’s? Will the sun rise twice this morning? Can I perform tomorrow’s deeds while standing in today’s path? Can I place tomorrow’s gold in today’s purse? Should I concern myself over events, which I may never witness? Should I torment myself with problems that may never come to pass? No! Tomorrow lies buried with yesterday, and I will think of it no more.

I will live this day as if it is my last.

This day is all I have and these hours are now my eternity. I greet this sunrise with cries of joy as a prisoner who is reprieved from death. I lift mine arms with thanks for this priceless gift of a new day. So too, I will beat upon my heart with gratitude as I consider all who greeted yesterday’s sunrise who are no longer with the living today. I am indeed a fortunate man and today’s hours are but a bonus, undeserved. Why have I been allowed to live this extra day when others, far better than I have departed? Is it that they have accomplished their purpose while mine is yet to be achieved? Is this another opportunity for me to become the man I know I can be? Is this my day to excel?

I will live this day as if it is my last.

I have but one life and life is naught but a measurement of time. When I waste one I destroy the other. If I waste today I destroy the last page of my life. Therefore, each hour of this day will I cherish for it can never return. It cannot be banked today to be withdrawn on the morrow, for who can trap the wind? Each minute of this day will I grasp with both hands and fondle with love for its value is beyond price. What dying man can purchase another breath though he willingly give all his gold? What price dare I place on the hours ahead? I will make them priceless!

I will live this day as if it my last.

I will avoid with fury the killers of time. Procrastination I will destroy with action; doubt I will bury under faith; fear I will dismember with confidence. Where there are idle mouths I will listen not; where there are idle hands I will linger not; where there are idle bodies I will visit not.

I will live this day as if it is my last.

And if it is my last, it will be my greatest monument. This day I will make the best day of my life. This day I will drink every minute to its full. I will savor its taste and give thanks. I will maketh every hour count and each minute I will trade only for something of value. I will labor harder than ever before and push my muscles until they cry for relief, and then I will continue. I will make more calls than ever before. I will sell more goods than ever before. I will earn more gold than ever before. Each minute of today will be more fruitful than hours of yesterday. My last must be my best.

I will live this day as if it is my last. And if it is not, I shall fall to my knees and give thanks.

8th Grade Career Day at G.W. Carver Middle School in Miami

I recently had the opportunity to be a guest speaker for the 8th Grade Career Day at G.W. Carver Middle School in Miami. It was truly a privilege to address students at the #1 Middle School in the State of Florida which is also a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence!

G.W. Carver is a magnet school for international education and advanced academics. All students are studying French, German or Spanish and Italian at an in-depth level. Many of them are proficient in one or more of these languages. As you can imagine, it was an educational experience for me to meet the students and to be in their enviornment for a couple of hours. My Student Ambassador, Natasha, did a great job as my host for the morning. That's her in the photo with me.

While there I got to attend an outstanding presentation by Mr. Andy Henriquez, a motivational speaker.

His inspiring message included six points based on the G.W. Carver mascot, the Hornet. It was wonderful to listen to Andy reinforce enduring principles that are the keys to happiness and success in any endeavor. As a professional coach, working with people to live their best life now, I found his points perfectly aligned with my own. Success principles never change!

Here are Andy's nuggets of wisdom:
1. H is for Heart. Follow your heart and do work that you love. You'll never work a day in your life if you do.
2. O is for Open-minded. Be open-minded and welcome new opportunities.
3. R is for Remove negative people and add positive people.
4. N is for Never give up!
5. E is for Embrace your gifts, visions and dreams.
6. T is for Trust in yourself!

New Beginnings

Happy New Year!

2010 is here. It’s a new year, a time for new beginnings, and an opportunity to release the past to make a fresh start.

If you could create anything you want this year, what would it be? Would you take a class? Lose weight once and for all? Make your health a priority? Deal with a difficult employer or co-worker? Make a career change? Start a business of your own? Run for office? Make those sales calls? Write a book? Play piano? Take up wind surfing, diving or tennis?

What would you do if you knew you wouldn’t fail? In coaching thousands of people these past nine years, I have seen over and over again that you can accomplish amazing things with the right support.

Here are a few of the successes I’ve enjoyed being a part of:
• An overweight, middle-aged man wants to get in shape. He takes up running as a form of exercise and now has a goal to go over 600 miles this year.
• A medical clinic CEO implements a management coaching program which results in a vibrant new culture, expanded client services, and increased profits.
• A law firm implements a leadership coaching program to maximize their investment in young associates suffering from burnout. It leads to a motivated, high performance team, and a happier workplace.
• A single mom leaves a dead-end corporate job to start a business so she can be at home with her toddler. She is creating a financial future that provides flexibility and unlimited income.
• A high-strung, stressed out workaholic agrees to take a vacation – his first in over six years.
• A super successful woman who has put her career first for many years decides to make herself priority, and in the process discovers the love of her life - and marries him!

It’s fun to be on the journey with such incredible people who are willing to step out of their comfort zone and try something different. What I know to be true is that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary results with support, guidance and accountability.

I would love to work with you this year to achieve your goals. As your coach, I will help you create the structure to make success easier, provide perspective and guidance to keep you on course, and hold you accountable for transforming your dreams into reality.

Are you ready to go for your goals? Are you ready to make changes to create your best year ever? Are you ready to play BIG?

Let’s get started! Here are your first steps:

1. Release the past. So you didn’t accomplish everything you wanted in 2009? So what. No one else did either. The past is over and done. Let it be. Where you are now is more important than where you have been.

2. Clarify your vision. What do you want? Write a description of what you want in as much detail as possible. Spend time visualizing your desires every day.

3. Commit to your success. Commitment means dedication. It means no turning back. Commit to making 2010 your year no matter what. Take action now.

4. Get support. Any goal is easier to reach with a success partner to keep you on course, to encourage you, and challenge you to be your best. Enlist a friend, find a mentor, or hire a coach.

Go for it! Make 2010 YOUR year!

Career Transition: Strategies for Staying Focused

Transition can be an exciting adventure. It can be revitalizing, refreshing and renewing. It can also be stressful, draining and frightening when you are facing uncertainty and confusion about the future. It can be difficult to see opportunities when you are gripped in fear and focused on what is missing or what may go wrong. Finding ways to manage the process can help you feel more in control of your situation and focused to move forward.

Working with clients to reinvent themselves and find new employment in this crazy economy is very rewarding. Helping a former corporate executive take steps to launch a new firm, a former sales professional retool to follow his dream to become a chef, and a mother of three young children leave the rat race to start a business that will allow her to spend more time with family have all been extremely satisfying.

What I'm finding is that, in a world where job security no longer exists, more and more people are looking for alternatives to traditional employment. More people are starting their own business as a way to build something for themselves, to gain control over their financial future, and to create a lifestyle they truly enjoy.
The internet opens a wealth of options for virtual self-employment, connections and business building activities that can help catapult your career to the next level. Home based businesses and network marketing are options that typically have low startup costs and come with proven success systems to follow.

Whether looking for employment, going to the next level in your current job, or starting a new business, here are six tips to help you with your next career move:
1. Be positive. A positive outlook will help you stay motivated and able to see possibilities that you might otherwise miss. Know that something good will happen as long as you are on the path and focusing on the positive.

2. Keep it simple. Put together a plan and begin taking consistent action every day. Stay focused by keeping your eye on the goal and following your plan.

3. Work your network. When a door is unlocked, it is easier to open. You may have a gold mine at your fingertips through existing contacts. Ask them for referrals and introductions.

4. Be open to new ideas. If you are willing to look at new possibilities, you will likely be amazed at what shows up. Be open to ideas that may lead you in the direction of your next career.

5. Make your self-care a priority. Going through change takes energy, clarity and focus. Building time into your schedule for exercise, eating well and getting enough rest is important to your overall stamina and well-being.

6. Express gratitude. Give thanks each morning for the gift of a new day filled with potential new beginnings. Focus on what you can do and appreciate what you have. What we appreciate appreciates.

Beauty Tips by Audrey Hepburn

For attractive lips,
Speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes,
Seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure,
Share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair,
Let a child run his fingers through it once a day.

For poise,
Walk with the knowledge you'll never walk alone.

People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed. Never throw out anybody.

Remember: if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find One at the end of your arm. As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.

Smiles are contagious

Smiles are contagious. It's no myth... it's biology.

Scientists have shown that seeing a smile triggers an automatic response in our brains which causes us to smile, too (a phenomenon known as "facial feedback"). This response in turn creates positive emotions.

—"Facial Efference and the Experience of Emotion," by P.K. Adelman and R.B. Zajonc (1989).

Are you smiling yet?

Are you getting in the way of your success?

Step aside and let success find you. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Often, the biggest roadblock to your success is you. As much as we would like to point to something or someone else for our failure and inability to achieve our most cherished goals, at the end of the day there is really only one place to look if you want to break free and create your best life now.

When you are blaming people or circumstances outside yourself, you become a victim, powerless to make changes that will improve your life. Taking responsibility for your success puts you in the driver’s seat where you can then take action from an empowered position.

Karen is an excellent example of someone standing in the way of her own success. A talented, successful pharmaceutical sales professional with over 10 years of experience, Karen had career aspirations that were going unrealized. Her dream had always been to open her own spa, but the dream had faded as she worked to climb the career ladder and sustain the lifestyle she had created. Old, worn out, limiting beliefs were holding Karen back from creating a life she truly loved.

By the time Karen called me to coach with her, things were rapidly changing in her world. She was losing her job due to downsizing and was concerned about finding another position. Fear was holding her back from moving forward. Blaming the company, the economy and other outside factors for her situation only held her captive and unable to take focused action.

We began with the steps outlined below to support Karen in creating an inspiring future. Rather than remain stuck, we put together a strategy to get into action and make powerful change to move forward.

Here are ideas for getting out of your own way:

1. Take responsibility for your life. Decide that you will take charge of your future and stop blaming outside circumstances. You are the only one who can change your outcomes.

2. Be present in the present moment. Rather than fretting about what is past or worrying about what may happen in the future, focus on being in the present moment and take full advantage of it.

3. Do your best and let it be. Stop overanalyzing your performance and constantly criticizing yourself for not having done better. Trust that you are doing the best you can and acknowledge yourself for that.

4. Express gratitude. Stop focusing on what you lack and be appreciative for what you have. What you appreciate appreciates.

Re-Invent Yourself

Would you like to re-invent yourself? Add a little more fun and pleasure to your life? Be who you really are instead of who you think you should be?

Would you like to reconnect with your passion? Dust off those dreams and create something new?

It takes courage to reinvent yourself, to step out of the familiar and be willing to try something new. Fear keeps most people from ever getting started. Not seeing “how” to make a change holds most people back from taking the first step. Martin Luther King said, “You don’t have to see the entire staircase, just take the next step.” Trust that the way will be revealed as you start to create a new outcome.

Many people have come to me recently for help reinventing themselves. Some are being forced to change in order to find a new career. Others are being proactive and taking steps to make changes that will free them from confusion and overwhelm to create a better future.

Amazing results can take place when you make changes in your life. I recently reconnected with one of my passions – dancing. Dance was an important part of my life growing up; some of the happiest memories of my childhood are of dancing. Many of the most valuable lessons I learned came from my dancing experience – discipline, commitment, practice, and the joy of success.

As an adult I had not danced nearly enough. A little disco in the ‘70s, a little salsa when I moved to Miami, some zumba at the gym, but overall way too few experiences to nourish my spirit and feed my inner dancer!

A few weeks ago, I ventured out to a dance studio and ended up at a ballroom class. Interestingly, it has been a life changing experience. A few of the things that have been happening since that first evening….. I met amazing Russian teachers who are true masters; I’ve made several new friends, learned a little cha-cha, foxtrot, waltz and tango - and met a phenomenal dance partner! Other amazing things seemed to have started happening since I stepped out to dance. I’m attracting new clients more easily, I’ve been asked to speak at several events, and a family misunderstanding that had lingered for several months was resolved with love and respect. Coincidence? Perhaps. I think not.

When you are living your life in a way that makes you feel alive, vibrant, happy, and fulfilled, you show up differently. Your performance at work is different, your relationships are easier, you like yourself more, your perspective shifts, and life is more enjoyable. Are you ready for a change? What will you do to reinvent yourself?

Here are some ideas:
1. Try a new haircut. Maybe a new hair color? How about a new fragrance?
2. Rearrange the furniture. Paint a wall. Clean out a closet – get rid of everything you haven’t worn for a year!
3. Leave work earlier. Get out of the office no later than 6pm!
4. Invite a new friend for lunch. New friends are everywhere if you are open to meet them – they shop at your grocery store, have kids that play with yours, share similar interests. Reach out!
5. Reconnect with your passion. For me it was dancing. What is your passion?
6. Laugh every day – often!
7. Explore a new profession. Research. Talk to people doing what you’d like to do to learn more.
8. Try something outside your comfort zone – scuba diving, a cooking class, karate, acting, singing.
